[Class 28 (i)] A toaster, griller, or like food-preparing device comprises upper and lower hot-plates 10, 11, between and in contact with which the food is cooked. The plates are heated by a gas burner or other source of hot gases, and means are provided for guiding the gases into contact with the outer faces of the plates. The plates 10, 11 are each mounted in a housing, the housings being connected together by hinge pins 28 and slotted hinge members 27, which allow various thicknesses of foodstuffs to be accommodated between the plates. The device is placed over a burner, and a baffle plate 12, having an asbestos backing 4S, prevents the gases from impinging directly upon and overheating the bottom plate 11. The gases are directed to vertical side channels 14 formed by telescoping members on the two housings. The top plate 10 is formed from an aluminium sheet which is corrugated to form flat sections 19 and gas passages 15. The sections 19 provide the operative surface in contact with the food. The passages 15 are cut away along the middle line to allow the gases to escape to the outlet 17, the gases flowing up each side channel 14 and from the ends of the passages 15 to the central vents. The flat sections 19 are maintained in position by comb-like keeper plates 23 having downwardly directed portions 38 which project into channel members 32 connected to or forming parts of the lower plate 11, thus forming a seal to prevent gases from entering between the plates 10, 11. The sides of the plate 11 are flanged at 40, and the front and rear edges are upwardly flared at 42 to prevent the escape of grease,' batter, &c. The bottom of the plate 11 is reinforced by a sheet 44 having stiffening ribs 45, and an asbestos sheet 48 is interposed. The upper housing is lined with an asbestos sheet 49. One edge, preferably the front edge, of the plate 11 is provided with a lip or spout for the escape of grease, and a removable cup is positioned under the spout. For pancakes, waffles, &c., the spout is eliminated or closed and the plates are made of cast aluminium. The outlet 17 has gas outlets on its sides, and carries a bi-metallic temperature indicator 59. The upper housing is lifted about the pivot pins 28 by the handle 52 and stops 30 on the slotted hinge members 27 hold it in an upright position.
