RANGE Filed Sept. 26, 1951 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 Patented Apr. 23, 1935 UNITED, STATES PATENT oFFicE RANGE John J. Toomey, Chicago, 111.
Application September 26, 1931, Serial lilo. 565,363 1 Claim. (c1. 126 -37) with the cooking-top section which is adapted to the purpose of frying meats, preparing roasts, etc.
In accordance with the invention, the range is equipped substantially in the plane of the ordinary cooking-top equipment with facilities for frying large steaks,'or the like, or for preparatorily cooking roasts, which may afterwards be placed in the ordinary baking oven and browned,
if desired.
In the accompanying drawings, the invention is shown applied to a flat-top range, but it is to be understood that, if desired, the cooking-top section'and the frying section maybe embodied in a range of the type in which an oven section extends above the level of the cooking-top and the frying-top sections. 7
In the drawings Figure'l is a front elevational view of a rang embodying the invention; Fig. 2, a plan view, slightly broken; Fig. 3, a sectional view, the sectionobeing taken parallel with the front of the range; Fig. 4, a broken sectional view, taken at right angles to the front side of the range; Fig. 51aplan view of the burner, 'oroheat-element, shown in Fig. 4,; Fig. 6, a broken sectional .view illustrating one form of cover for the fryingsection of the range; Fig. '7, a broken sectional view corresponding with the section shown in Fig. 4, but showingthe frying-pan equipped with a higher cover than is shown in Fig. 4, adapting the device to be used for cooking a roast; and Fig. 8, a broken vertical sectional view correspending with Fig. 7, but showing a modification. For convenience of description, the section of the range which can be used for frying large steaks or the like, and which can also be used for preparing a roast, is referred to 'as a "fryingsection. It may be remarked at this point that this section is equipped with a relatively large burner, oi heating element, which enables ,the section'to be effectively employed for the purpose stated; also, roasting operations maybe performed on this portion of the rangein a highly convenient manner, and, if desired, the roast may finally beplaced in the ordinary baking oven and the roasting operation'completed in a few minutes to give a desirable browning eflect to the. roast.
Referring to Figs. 1-7, A designates the frame of the range, which may be constructed mainly,
or wholly, of sheet-metalr-B and Cbroiler and baking ovens, respectively; D, a cooking-top section disposed above the oven C; and .E, a supplemental sectiondisposed parallel with and at substantially the same level'as the cooking-top sec- I tion, the section E being available for frying large steaks, preparing roasts, etc.
The range may be of any suitable construction. In the form shown it has a flat top, designated l, which comprises a frame-member I grid sec-, tions l and a withdrawable, or removable, cover-plate I.
The upper portion of the range is divided into a burner-chamber 2 within which are mounted the usual burners 2, shown as four in number; and a burner-chamber 3 which extends from the front to the rear of the range and has mounted therein a large burner, or heating element, 3. The chambers 2 and 3 preferably are separated by a vertical partition 4. The bottom walls of the burner-chambers are. designated 5 and 6; the outer lateral walls of these chambers are designated 6; the rear wall is designated 6 and the front wall, or panel, is designated 6..
The frame-member l at the top of the range has the usual recesses forming a socket for the grids l and it has also an elongated, rectangular socket I located in the upper portion of the burner-chamber 3. Within this socket is supported a removable hot-plate l which is in the 5 In the preferred arrangement, a gas manifold I0 extends along the front of the range just back of the panel 6, gas being supplied to the manifold through a pipe Ill which may enter the burnerchamber" through the rear wall of the range. The burners 2* of the ordinary cooking-top portion of the stove are controlled by valves designated II. The large burner of the supplemental cooking-top section E is controlled by a valve designated l2.
In the upper portion of the broiler oven B is located a burner, on heating element, l3 which receives its gas supply from the manifold l0 through a pipe l3 controlled by a valve l3".
The burner for the baking oven 0 is designated M. It receives its gas supply from the manifold l0 through a pipe Il controlled by a valve I 4 The door of the broiler oven B is designated I5. It is equipped with a handle l5. The door of the baking oven C is designated l6. It is equipped with a handle l6. Storagedrawers are provided in the base-portion of the range at H and I8, which may be utilized for any purpose desired.
The cover of the section E 01' the range may be made removable, or arranged to swing backwardly and upwardly in a manner now understood in the art. In the illustration given, the cover-plate is composed of two sections, one of which is connected by a hinge l 9 to the rear portion of the top-frame I and the other of which is connected by a pivot 20 with the free edge of the first-mentioned section. Thus, the cover may be swung upwardly and backwardly and folded upon itself. It may be supported in standing position in any suitable manner (not shown) The top frame-member l of the range has a depressed seat, indicated at 2|, in which the coverplate I is supported.
The cover-plate l, in the closed position, has its upper surface substantially flush with the upper surface of the top-frame l and of the grids supported therein. Said cover-plate may rest in its seat, regardless of whether or not the frying-pan cover 8 is removed from the frying-pan.
Fig. 8 shows a modification of a supplementa cooking-top section, which is designated E. The construction is similar to that already described, except that the removable frying-pan l and the cover-plate I are dispensed with.
In their stead, a hot plate 1 is employed as a cover for the burner-chamber 3. This plate has It is to be understood that the plate is substantially flush with the upper surface of the grids.
The improved construction provides a range having the ordinary cooking-top sections and in addition thereto a supplemental cooking-top section which is equipped with a relatively large heating element and which is covered by a large substantially rectangular hot plate,- which may, if desired, be in the form of a removable pan. The cover-plate for the supplemental section, which preferably is employed, is at a proper level to serve as a table, and cooking utensils may be shifted with case from the grid-portion of the cooking-top to the supplemental section of the cookingtop.
Other advantages inoidental'to the improved range will be appreciated by those skilled in the art. While gas burners are shown as heating elements for the range, electric heating elements may be substituted, if desired.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A range comprising a main cooking-top section equipped with burners and a supplemental cooking-top section provided with a frame member having in one plane a socket, a hinged cover-plate mounted therein and substantially flush when closed with the cooking-top, said frame member being equipped in a lower plane with a. second socket in which is mounted a shallow pan-like hot plate provided with a removable imperforate cover having a substantially fiat unobstructed up; per surface, said second socket being of suflicient depth to permit the cover-plate to be closed with said hot plate cover in position, and a burner disposed beneath said hot plate, extending the full length thereof .JOHN J. TOOMIEY.
