[Class 130] In a cigar-wrapping machine having a wrapper and flag cutter 8 and means for delivering a wrapper from the cutter to a bunch A positioned within a wrapping mechanism 14, a flag nicker 11 is operative before the wrapper is delivered, and a heading block 34 positioned within the wrapping mechanism is advanced longitudinally of the mechanism to embrace the head end of the bunch. As shown, the wrapper and flag cutter comprises a die 8 co-operating with tapered rollers 9, 10 carried by a head 6 sliding on a rail 7. An additional die 11 for nicking the flag co-operates with a roller 12. The rollers 9, 10, 12 are supported for yielding vertical movement and each roller 9, 10 contacts only with one half of the die 8, while the roller 12 contacts only with the die 11. The wrapper carrier 3 is supported by an arm 4 and actuated by cams 5, 63 and an arm 13 as described in Specification 375,604. A tension plate 16 running in a guide 18 is moved laterally with respect to a set of wrapping rollers 14 by a cam 19 and lever 21, 22. The end of the plate 16 adjacent to the head of the bunch A is provided with a perforated friction roller 28 rotatable on a socket 31 having a slot 54 and formed with a pipe 29 adapted to come into register with the opening 73 of a suction conduit 32, so that the wrapper is taken by the roller 28 from the surface 17 of the carrier 3. The removal of the wrapper from the surface 17 may be assisted by an air blast through a chamber 48, Fig. 10, in the carrier 3. The heading block 34 is closed at its outer end and has a lateral opening to facilitate the introduction of the bunch into the set of rollers 14. An ironing roller 37 movable into and out of the opening is loosely journalled on an arm 38 actuated by a cam on the rotating shaft 20. The heading block is reciprocated by a doublearmed lever 39, 45 actuated by a cam 47 on the shaft 20. In modifications, (a) the roller 28 has a toothed rim 70, Fig. 9, meshing with a rack 71 on the wrapper carrier 3, so that the roller is driven when the carrier 3 moves into the position shown in Fig. 5 ; (b) the nicking die is provided on the suction surface 17 of the carrier 3 and a roller similar to 12 is provided beneath the path of the carrier to cooperate with the die.
