Abstract

495,217. Heating by chemical action. POPP, W. July 27, 1937, Nos. 20758 and 20760. Convention dates, March 22, 1937 and June 14, 1937. [Class 64 (ii)] In apparatus in which a tin of foodstuff is heated by an exothermic chemical reaction, the tin a is surrounded by a casing b, the bottom c of which has a recess e to centre the tin a. Calcium oxide g is filled into the annular space and is surmounted by an annular container i containing water. A layer of longitudinally corrugated cardboard f is provided within the casing b to provide for the pressure generated by the chemical action. A ring l is folded over the casing b at m and the tin a at n. Several openings p are provided in the ring, closed by pasteboard q, so that this ring and the container below may be pierced by a needle or the like to allow water to reach the calcium oxide to generate heat. Alternatively, a wire may project from the opening p which may be pulled to destroy the container i. In a modification, the heating chemicals may be provided in a cartridge adapted to be inserted into a tin of foodstuff.
