[Class 98 (i)] A reciprocating diaphragm or grid a for reducing the effects of secondary and scattered radiation during X-ray exposures, is mounted in a frame b, and is operated by a lever d pivoted at e to a fixed arm e<1>. The lever d is slotted and engages at one end a pivot g carried by an arm g<1> fixed to the diaphragm, and at the other end a pivot f carried by an arm f<1> fixed to a rack h moving on a guide rod j. The end of the arm f moves on a guide rod k. The rack h is actuated by an electric motor m through gearbox m<1> and pinion m<2>, and the motor is reversed at each stroke of the diaphragm by means of a projecting bracket which engages a switch arm o which reverses the electrical connections. Bells v are sounded by strikers t to indicate when the exposure may be made. To vary the speed of the diaphragm the arm e<1> is adjustable relatively to the pivot f by moving in a slot in the frame associated with an indicating scale e<3>.
