Abstract

That portion of an alkaline detergent scouring solution in a wool cleaning plant which contains substantially the whole of the dirt is rapidly withdrawn from the bath at a low point in the scouring stage, either continuously or intermittently, and is transferred to one or more settling tanks where the contents are heated to a temperature above the hot scouring solution and where solids and grease are separated from the solution, the purified liquid being returned to the scouring solution. Solids and grease are preferably separately removed from the settling tank or tanks, and a final separation of the grease may be effected by a centrifuge. Loss of volume of the scouring solution is made up by the addition of water to the solution in the settling tank. Used scouring liquor of low dirt content and high grease content collected from squeeze rolls associated with the scouring bowls may be separately transferred to the settling tank or tanks. The concentration of detergent in the scouring solution is maintained by additions in accordance with electric conducting determinations of the scouring solution, as described in Specification 470,000.
