Abstract

A process for melting light metal or alloy scrap comprises degreasing the scrap by means of a solvent, drying the scrap, and adding it to a bath of metal the temperature of which is 10-50 DEG C. above the melting point of the scrap under a layer of fused salt which consists of a mixture of at least three different halides. At least one of the halides is an alkali halide having a melting point of 500-700 DEG C., and the mixture contains no heavy metal salts or salts which react with the metal. The salt mixture may consist of three or more alkali halides, or it may contain an alkaline earth halide or an aluminium halide or both. When treating aluminium or magnesium scrap the temperature may be 650-690 DEG C., and in the case of light alloys 520-650 DEG C. The process may be carried out in a furnace in which the molten metal bath is separated by a dividing wall, fused salt being on one side only of the wall.
