Abstract

494,111. Numbering-machines; ruling- machines. BAILEY'S PRINTING INVENTIONS, Ltd., and BAILEY, J. April 24, 1937, No. 11765. [Class 100 (ii)] Tripping-arrangements.-A numbering, ruling,. or like machine is constructed with a tripping device which declutches the drive of the numbering or like operating device if a sheet is not fed to the machine. The sheets are fed by tapes 12 to an impression cylinder 8, Fig. 1, with which co-operates a number of numbering- boxes 11 carried by a shaft 9 which is driven from the impression cylinder 8 by means of a clutch comprising a claw tooth 17 on a boss 16 carried by a gear which is freely mounted on the shaft 9 and a pivoted claw 18 mounted on a disc fixed to the shaft 9. A spring 21 tends to effect engagement of the parts 17, 18, but when a sheet is missing a lever 23 is rotated and an arm 24 on the lever acts on a projection 25 of the claw 18 and the drive is disconnected. The lever 23 is operated by a trip shaft 31 which is fitted with a lever 32, having a roller 33 adapted to be acted upon by an adjustable cam 35 on the impression cylinder, so as to move the lever 32 counterclockwise and so move inwards a catch 37 which normally engages an inclined bar 38 to prevent the lever 32 from moving clockwise under action of a spring 34 and so operate the lever 23 by means of lever mechanism 30, 29, 27, 26. If a sheet is present it raises the catch 37 and permits the lever 23 to move out of the path of the projection 25 so that the shaft 9 is driven and the numbering-devices are operated and print on the sheet. The trip shaft 31 also operates a cam 54 which controls the position of inking- rollers mounted in pivoted arms, and causes the rollers to be moved away from the numbering-devices when these are tripped. The shaft 31 controls the position of a push rod 44, Fig. 5, formed with pushers 49, 50 which are made to engage one or other of two rollers 60, 61 on a lever 51 which controls the position of the cam 54. The clutch 17, 18 may be used with a brake which holds the shaft 9 stationary when the clutch is disengaged. The invention may be applied to combined numbering and perforating machines, and the machine may be run without the automatic check mechanism.
