Abstract

Furs, pelts and hair are dyed, preferably after treatment by a chrome tannage process, with monoazo dyes obtained by coupling an aminonaphthol or an N-derivative thereof with a diazotized amine of the formula <FORM:0493781/IV/1> where X is NH2 or m- or p-NH2.C6H4.NH-and the ring may carry other substituents, e.g. nitro or halogen, but is devoid of sulphonic acid groups. The materials may also be previously submitted to treatment with alkaline agents and/or other agents capable of increasing the dyeing capacity of the hairy portions, e.g. hypochlorites or phosphates. The dyeing is preferably commenced under neutral conditions with subsequent addition of acids such as formic or acetic acids. The usual dyeing assistants may be used. The temperature of the dyebath is dependent on the materials, varying between 40 and 100 DEG C. In example (1) chrome-tanned white rabbit fur is dyed with anthranilic acid --> (alkaline) 1-N-b -hydroxyethylamino-5-naphthol at 70 DEG C., acetic acid being added during the process. In further examples and in a table, the above dye is replaced by m-aminobenzoic acid --> (alkaline) 1-acetamino-7-naphthol, 1 : 5-aminonaphthol or 1 - N - b - hydroxyethylamino - 5 - naphthol or --> (acid) 1 : 5 - aminonaphthol; p - aminobenzoic acid --> (alkaline) 1-N-b -hydroxyethylamino-, 1-acetamino- or 1-amino-7-naphthol, or 2 : 7-aminonaphthol, or --> (acid) 1 - N - b - hydroxyethylamino - 5 - naphthol or 2 : 7-aminonaphthol; 4-amino-21-nitrodiphenylamine-41-carboxylic acid --> (alkaline) 1-N-b -hydroxyethylamino- or 1-amino-5-naphthol. 4 - Amino - 21 - nitrodiphenylamine - 41 - carboxylic acid is obtained by condensing p-phenylenediamine and 3-nitro-4-chlorobenzoic acid.
