493,691. Steam - traps. SKERRETT, W. S. (Aktiebolaget Rosenblads Patenter May 17, 1938, No. 14702. [Class 64 (ii)] In a steam-trap comprising a condensate chamber 1 separated by a partition 10 from a pressure channel 12, both of which communicate with the inlet through a throttled opening 13 and the common inlet pipe 3 respectively, and having a discharge pipe 6 with apertures 7, the latter are normally kept closed by a slide 8 integral with a piston 9 by the equilibrium of the down-thrust of the liquid in the channel 12 on the underside of the piston and the pressure of the condensate already in the chamber 1 on the upperside of the piston, excess liquid entering the chamber 1 from the channel 12 overcoming this equilibrium and moving the piston downwards to uncover the apertures and discharge this excess. The piston thus oscillates over a short range and may be at the base of a long slide or nearer the apertures, as shown by the dotted lines. A guiding funnel 15 may be attached to the slide to direct the excess condensate directly to the apertures and prevent extraneous pressure differences influencing the piston. In a modification of the invention, the inlet and outlet openings 3, 5, Fig. 2, are arranged in an upper casing 2 above the draining and control means in a lower casing 4a. The piston is replaced by a bellshaped member 9a surrounding a pressure chamber 1a which communicates with the inlet opening by a throttled communicating pipe 13a. A seal of mercury is arranged between the wall of the condensate chamber and the pressure chamber 1a into which the lower part of the piston 9a depends. The apertures 7 may be obliquely directed in the wall of the discharge tube or arranged tangentially to the tube axis.
