Abstract

493,627. Aircraft - wing structure. HUTH, F. April 16, 1937, No. 10932. [Class 4] The frame of a hollow aircraft part, particularly a wing or body, comprises upper and lower booms provided at their opposing margins with extensions and integral members crossing the same and having portions extending between and connecting the booms at opposing extensions, the extensions and crossing members being formed with slits engaging each other in pairs to provide interlinked joints, and said booms and extensions being fixed to the said portions of the crossing members. In one form, Fig. 1, upper and lower transverse booms 1, 2 each constituted by a web member having marginal flanges 9 glued thereto are glued together at their extremities to form a rib and are spaced along the wing span by engagement of slots 7, Fig. 6, cut in extensions 10, Fig. 6, of their webs in slots 8, Fig. 3, of longitudinal plate members 5. Parts 1, 2, 5 are further secured as shown in Figs. 1 and 6 by vertical posts 3 disposed one on each side of each plate 5 and glued thereto and to extensions 10, 11. Webs 1, 2 and flanges 9 are slotted at 13 to allow passage of rods 4, which extend for the full span and are glued to members 5. The rods 4 may be made in sections overlapping at the joints and arranged successively on opposite sides of members 5 or, as shown, continuous rods 4 are located in slots 13 by cleats 4<1>. Bracing members 15 are provided between members 1, 2. The plates forming parts of the booms and the web members 5 consist of wood veneers reinforced and interconnected by a binding medium such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Bakelite." In a modification, Fig. 7, the rib members are integrally formed from pressings, e.g. of reinforced synthetic resin material and comprise a flange 20 and a web 21 having a vertical extension 22 formed with a flange 25 for attachment to longitudinal member 5 and with a key member 27 adapted to engage the web of the opposite boom. Slots 24 are provided to engage with slots 8 of member 5. Fig. 8 shows a further modification in which longitudinal members 4 are replaced by lateralextensions 30 formed integrally with the rib booms and having a slotted extension 31 adapted to engage the web of the adjacent boom. Alternatively, the extension 31 is disposed transversely of the web of element 30 and engages with its slot the web of the adjacent member 30. Braces 15 may be formed integrally with a rib web. In a still further modification, Fig. 9, plate ribs 35 are employed having peripheral flanges 37 and posts 38 glued thereto and being formed with peripheral slots to receive longitudinal booms 39 provided with flanges 40.
