Abstract

Thioacetals are obtained by condensing one mol. of an aromatic aldehyde or ketone sulphonic acid with 2 mols. of an aliphatic, araliphatic, hydroaromatic or aromatic mercaptan. The thioacetals may be used for wetting, softening and finishing textiles and when suitably substituted they protect wool, feathers, hair and furs from moths and other pests. In examples: (1) sodium benzaldehyde-o-sulphonate is reacted in glacial acetic acid with thiophenol, 2-, 3- or 4-chlorthiophenol, 2 - chlorbenzylmercaptan, and 2 - oxybenzylmercaptan; the use of benzaldehyde m- and p-sulphonic acid and of 2-chlorbenzaldehyde-5-sulphonic acid is mentioned: (2) sodium acetophenone-p-sulphonate is condensed with 4 - chlorthiophenol, 2 - chlorbenzyl-mercaptan and 2 - methyl - 3 - chlorthiophenyl; (3) sodium benzaldehydedisulphonate is condensed with p-chlorthiophenol; (4) 1 mol. of sodium benzaldehyde-o-sulphonate is condensed with 1 mol. each of benzyl mercaptan and 4-chlorthiophenol or 1 mol. each of benzylmercaptan and dodecyl mercaptan. A sample furnished under Sect. 2 (5) is prepared by condensing the sodium salt of benzaldehyde-o-sulphonic acid with tetrahydrothionaphthol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the production and use of thioacetals derived from a sulphonated compound containing a reactive carbonyl group and a mercaptan, acetaldehyde-disulphonic acid being mentioned as a starting material. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
