Abstract

To prevent the deposition of metal on selected portions of surfaces which are to be metallized by thermal vaporization in vacuo, the selected portions are treated with an organic liquid or semi-liquid, preferably of boiling point above 150 DEG C., which liberates vapours when heated in vacuo. The material may be a hydrocarbon, e.g. an oil or grease, a halogenated hydrocarbon, a polyhydric alcohol such as glycerine, a resin or a wax, and it is preferably applied as a very thin layer, e.g. by printing or impressing. By this means designs may be produced by printing either the design or the negative of the design; bands or strips may be printed in this way to form advertisements on wrapping paper &c. Bands or strips of insulating-material such as paper can be metallized for use in the construction of electrostatic condensers, one or both edges of the band and also marks at definite lengths being kept free from metal by greasing them prior to metallizing. Resistances comprising a meandering strip of metal on an insulating-material, e.g. paper, can be made by greasing the places which are to remain free of metal. By forming by similar means longitudinal metal strips on a strip of insulating-material, e.g. paper, and winding up the paper, disc coil windings may be produced. In making kinematograph films the picture to be projected is applied to a transparent film band in the form of a metal design, the places to be kept free from metal being first printed with grease &c., and the film then treated with metal vapour. For sound-film records an oil-bearing member is caused to oscillate in contact with the film band to form an oil track corresponding to the sound oscillations and the band then exposed to metal vapour in vacuo.
