Abstract
1,069,137. Capacitors. SIEMENS A.G. Dec. 9, 1964 [Dec. 10, 1963], No. 50034/64. Heading HIM. A method of manufacturing a regenerative capacitor includes vapour depositing a metal layer 11 on a first varnish film 10 and applying a swelling agent to the exposed surface of the metal layer, such that the swelling agent passes through pores in the metal layer and swells the varnish film so as to form cracks in the metal layer (see Fig. 1). The swelling agent may be applied in vapour form or as a solvent in liquid form containing a solute that on evaporation of the solvent forms a second varnish film 12 on the exposed surface of the metal layer. Paraffin oil or silicone oil to restrain the operation of the swelling agent may be deposited on the metal layer before the swelling agent is applied, or it may be included in a liquid which on solidification forms the first varnish film, or it may be present in the solvent applied as swelling agent. Two such capacitor strips comprising varnish films 10, 12, e.g. of acetyl-cellulose, may be rolled together, a marginal strip 13 of the metal electrode layer 11 being left free from cracks. Either one of the varnish films 10 or 12 may be a dielectric film, or the dielectric may be formed by a paper or a non-swelling or insoluble plastics backing strip upon which the first varnish film 10 is deposited.
