Abstract

High molecular weight organic compounds are prepared by treating a halogenated derivative of a solid or semi-solid polymer of ethylene with a substance or substances capable of reacting with halogen or hydrogen halide, in order to remove halogen, wholly or in part, from the halogenated derivative. Suitable substances include ammonia, caustic alkalis, sodium polysulphides, metals such as zinc or sodium, metal alcoholates or amines, being used if desired in the presence of a suitable liquid medium. In examples, halogenated polymers of ethylene are treated with (1) alcoholic ammonia, (2) zinc, (3) aniline, (4) piperidine, and (5) pyridine. Specifications 471,590 and 481,515 are referred to.
