Abstract
N-Vinyl compounds are manufactured by reacting acetylene at elevated temperatures on pyrrole or an organic compound containing the pyrrole ring in the presence of an alkali metal or a substance having a strongly alkaline reaction and of ammonia or a heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen in tertiary combination, e.g. pyridine, quinoline, isoquinoline or their derivatives, or on a secondary diarylamine in the presence of an alkali metal or a substance having a strongly alkaline reaction and of ammonia. The added substances may be used in small amounts, e.g. the amount of pyridine present in carbazole recrystallized from pyridine is sufficient, or in such amounts that they act as solvents. A comparative experiment shows the effect on the reaction of carbazole dissolved in cyclohexane at 180 DEG C. with a mixture of acetylene and nitrogen under pressure in the presence of potassium hydroxide, of the addition of pyridine, ammonia (used in place of nitrogen to dilute the acetylene), quinoline, 8-hydroxyquinoline and 8-hydroxyquinaldine. In an example, diphenylamine is treated as above in the presence of potassium and ammonia, yielding N-vinyldiphenylamine.
