492,190. Manhole covers and frames. NEEDHAM, W. - March 18, 1937, Nos. 7923 and 29041. [Class 107] Relates to manhole covers and frames of the kind in which the cover and frame are formed with interengaging projections and recesses each having oppositely inclined edges adapted to support the weight of the cover. According to the invention, one edge of each projection h and recess b is, for a portion of its length, inclined in the reverse direction thus providing contacting surfaces e, e<1>, which prevent any tilting movement of the cover. Instead of or in addition to the surfaces of reverse inclination, the cover and frame are, according to an alternative construction, provided with interengaging projections and recesses the sides of which have approximately the same inclination as one of the edges of the projections h and recesses b. A slight rotary movement of the circular cover shown is thus necessitated when introducing it into the frame. To ensure that the cover is correctly positioned, it is provided with a projection i which is adapted to enter a corresponding recess in the frame. In a modification, the projections and recesses are formed on the opposite sides of a rectangular cover and frame, which dips into a fluid contained in a peripheral trough on the frame.
