Abstract

492,093. Wire resistances. PONT, J. S., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 3, 1938, No. 118/37. [Class 37] A resistance thermometer for use at high temperatures such as 500- 1000‹ C. consists of an open helix 2 of platinum or other resistance wire housed in a refractory sheath 8, the ends of the helix being attached to thicker lead-in wires. 5, 6. The resistance wire is first closely wound on a former ; it is then removed from the former and its ends are attached to the lead-in wires. The helix is then inserted into a refractory sheath, which is of material having little or no free silica, such as sillimanite, porcelain, or recrystallized alumina. The helix is stretched during or after introduction into the sheath, so as to separate the turns, and may then be annealed. The interior of the sheath is then packed with a refractory cement which does not attack the resistance wire at high temperatures, for example alumina or zirconia cement. The refractory sheath may have a single channel as shown in Fig. 2 or two parallel channels as shown in Fig. 4, the middle portion of the helix being pulled out as shown at 11. Alternatively this portion may remain undistorted or the helix may be divided and the portions joined by a thicker wire. Compensating leads 12, 13, Fig. 4, may be provided in a sheath 14 located in a central passage of the sheath 8.
