Abstract

Neutral aluminium salts of carboxylic acids are obtained by heating metallic aluminium with the anhydrous carboxylic acid in the presence of a carboxylic acid anhydride. Small quantities of the anhydride reckoned on the acid used suffice. The acid from which the anhydride is derived may have the same or a smaller number of carbon atoms than the acid used in the reaction. The acid should be in excess, whereby the salt formed may be readily separated as a powder, the excess acid being then used in a further operation. Reaction is preferably effected at the boiling point of the acid. The aluminium may be used in the form of powder or wastes, as turnings, tubes, sheets or plates. Examples relate to the production of aluminium acetate, propionate, butyrate and oenanthate, and to the use of acetic, propionic, butyric and oenanthic anhydrides.
