Abstract

491,325. Lifting-jacks; lifting ships' hatchway covers. TUTIN HATCHWAYS, Ltd., and BARRETT, H. R. March 18, 1937, No. 8046. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In traversing jacks having a pair of driven traversing wheels each wheel is driven by irreversible worm gear connected to a common driving means. As applied to the raising of a ship's hatchway covers, the jack comprises a screw-lifting-pillar 12 which is moved axially by a nut 14 rotated by bevel gearing 20 from a crank handle 18, and is arranged centrally between, but offset from, two traversing wheels 8 in tandem which run on the rail 10 arranged above the hatchway. Each wheel 8 is driven from the crank handle 30 through the worm gearing 24, 26 One of these jacks is arranged at each end of a cover member to transport same. Pivoted carrying-handles 32 are provided with bent portions 36 which abut the ends of the shaft 28 in the carrying position. Specifications 475,875, [Group XXXIII], and 491,324 are referred to.
