Abstract

Permeable bodies such as filters and battery separators are made by mixing hard, porous, non-swelling particles of silica gel wetted with sufficient water to fill the pores and coat the particles with a solid hard rubber compound, shaping as by extruding or calendering, spraying with water to displace entrapped air, immersing in water, and vulcanizing. Besides the silica gel particles, porous rubber dust, e.g. scrap from broken separators, ground pumice, and diatomaceous earth may be added. The rubber compound may comprise smoked sheet or reclaim, sulphur, fillers, e.g. hard rubber dust, softeners, stearic acid, an accelerator, &c. The shaped article may be sprayed with hot water after being spread out flat on a metal slab, and, if desired soaked in water, before vulcanizing.
