Abstract

491,097. Polarizing devices for headlamps. WIEMER, K., and SCHNEIDER AKT.-GES., H. March 11, 1937, No. 7216. Convention date, March 16, 1936. Addition to 472,232, [Group XI]. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XI] A polarizing element to be disposed, as described in the parent Specification, between the light source and the reflector of a headlamp, is tubular and comprises a plurality of polarizer elements arranged lengthwise with their longitudinal edges in contact with one another, the planes of polarization of the elements making different angles with the optical axis of the headlamp, and the angle changing progressively from one polarizer element to the next by such steps that the aggregate change amounts to 90‹ in each quadrant. The elements may be mounted on a cylindrical or polygonal transparent hollow base. The elements may be of synthetic dichroic foil, which is a transparent film with a thin layer of small crystals of iodoquinine sulphate, the crystals having their polarizing axes substantially parallel. In the form shown, two circular pieces of dichroic foil have each been divided into sectors which are placed around a glass cylinder A. The sectors 1, 2 ... 12 of one circular piece fit between the sectors 13, 14 ... of the other piece, and the planes of polarization are as indicated by the hatching. The elements may alternatively be narrow rectangular plates. Tourmaline plates may be used without a supporting base.
