Abstract
490,641. Automatic circuit-breakers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 19, 1937, No. 31907. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] Operating mechanism comprises an actuating solenoid having a reciprocally operable plunger corrected by a flexible linkage to a member to be actuated reciprocally movable in a direction generally transverse to the direction of plunger-movement, a pivoted element including a roller coacting with the flexible connection for guiding and restraining the same along a path of changing direction, actuation of the solenoid effecting a pull on the connection to move the member in one direction, and trip means for releasing the member so that the resulting slack in the connection permits reverse movement of the member. The Figure shows the application to a trip-free switch the switch member 4 of which, when stripped, is opened by a spring 21. The plunger 2 of the solenoid 1 is connected to member 4 by a flexible chain 3 which is guided round a roller 8 on a bell-crank lever 5. The far end of 5 carries a roller 11 which is normally held in the closed position shown by a lever 12 having a trip arm 14 which is rotatable on a shaft 13 by a trip-solenoid 15 or manual trip-lever 18. When the solenoid 1 is de-energized, the plunger 2 is retained by a spring-controlled prop 22 pivoted at 23. The bisector of the angle between the two parts of the chain 3 is offset by the distance a from the pivot 6 of the lever 5, so that when the latter is tripped the spring 21 rotates it clockwise, and the chain 3 collapses. A surface 5<1> on lever 5 then engages an extension 26 on prop 22, so moving it clear of the plunger 2, which is then raised by a spring 27, and allows a spring 28, tensioned during the opening movement, to restore the lever 5 to reset position. The breaker is reclosed by energizing the solenoid, and is retained by the spring 24 producing re-engagement of 22 with a pin 25, on the plunger 2, the pin being guided by plates 25<1>.
