Abstract
1320474 Automatic circuit-breakers ELLENBERGER & POENSGEN GmbH 6 Jan 1972 [13 May 1971] 587/72 Heading H1N A push-button circuit-breaker has a bridging contact 18 connected to the push-button 39 by a toggle 20, 24 having pivot pins 19, 25 guided in grooves 27, 26 in the housing 1 and a toggle joint formed by a pin and slot connection 22, 23 with a spring 57 tending to bias the levers apart. When the circuit-breaker is being closed the pin 19 abuts a shoulder 28 in the groove 27 until a projection 55 on the toggle lever 20 engages a stop 56 formed in the housing, so that as the toggle is straightened the pin 19 is caused to slide off the shoulder 28 and the spring 57 snaps the contacts closed and thereafter provides the contact pressure. The contacts are held closed by a pivoted latch lever 30 which engages the pivot 25 of the toggle lever 24, this lever having an arm 49 which is latched by a trip lever 48. In the event of excess current conditions a thermal and/or electromagnetic tripping device turns a shaft 47 causing the lever 48 to release the lever 24 so that the toggle collapses under the pull of a spring 33 opening the contacts 15, 17, 16. A spring 43 moves the push-button 39 out to its open position and through a link 61 straightens the toggle to reset the circuit-breaker for a subsequent closing operation. The tripping device is arranged in a separate compartment in the housing and may comprise a U-shaped bimetallic strip through which the current flows so that electrodynamic forces cause the free limb of the strip to bend in the tripping direction. This limb acts through a push-rod on an ambient temperature compensating strip secured to the shaft 47, Fig. 2 (not shown). Three circuit-breakers may be secured together to form a multi-pole unit, only the central circuit-breaker having a push-button and the shafts 47 and the pins 25 being interconnected, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown).
