Abstract

490,521. Force - feed lubrication. PAUL, D. W. F. D., REES, C. L., and LUSH, G. R. W. Jan. 12, 1937, No. 926. [Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXVII and XXVII] A switch operative on fall of lubrication pressure for breaking the ignition circuit of an internal-combustion engine or giving an alarm, is actuated by a device in which the lubrication pressure is opposed by a variable counterpressure sensitive to engine speed or suction. The switch comprises three chambers A, B and C bolted together of which C contains a diaphragm 8 carrying a headed plunger 14, 15 which is raised against the pressure of spring 7 by oil pressure from the lubricating system transmitted through pipe 11 to the underside of diaphragm 8. With oil pressure of sufficient magnitude, a contact 6 bridges contacts 1 and 2 to close the switch. Acting on a plate 22 against this movement is the difference between atmospheric pressure acting above a diaphragm 18 in chamber A and the reduced pressure below diaphragm 18 equal to the carburetter suction pressure. Needle valves 26 and 29a control outlet 25 to the atmosphere and connection 29 to the source of suction respectively. At starting the suction is small and the oil pressure required to close the switch is low, but as the speed increases, the pressure of oil required to close the switch increases. Modifications are described wherein a force proportional to engine speed acting against the oil pressure may be obtained with the suction effect replaced by oil pumped to the upperside of diaphragm 18 by an engine driven pump, a spring finger screwed down by a governor operated lever, or by a bimetallic strip heated by current from an engine driven dynamo. A further modification includes contacts closed to give a visual or audible warning before the ignition circuit is opened. Specification 485,944 is referred to.
