Abstract
Polymerization of vinyl methyl ketone during distillation or storage is counteracted by performing the distillation, advantageously under atmospheric pressure, in the presence of a free unsulphonated organic acid soluble in water and in vinyl methyl ketone, or by adding to the ketone before storage a quantity of such acid sufficient to ensure the presence of free acid. A stabilizing agent such as hydroquinone or a copper salt may also be added. The invention is applicable to the separation of mixtures of vinyl methyl ketone and a hydrocarbon, especially vinylacetylene, by distillation. In examples: (1) and (3) acetic acid is added to vinyl methyl ketone and the mixture is distilled; (2) formic acid is similarly employed; (4) acetic acid is added to a mixture of vinyl methyl ketone and vinylacetylene, which is then fractionated by introducing it into the middle of a column heated to 80 DEG C. Other aliphatic carboxylic acids of low molecular weight, e.g. propionic, butyric or glycollic acid, may also be used.
