Abstract
489,444. Floating bridges. KNIGHT, A. W. Feb. 15, 1937, No. 4439. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1936. [Class 20 (i)] A floating bridge is arched in a horizontal plane between its end abutments to which it is flexibly connected. The bridge may comprise a single rib between the end abutments or may comprise two ribs hingeably connected at the crown of the arch, and may be formed of wood, metal or concrete. As shown the ribs are formed hollow of reinforced concrete 9 having a roadway 11 with side screens 12, Fig. 2. The ends are connected to the abutments 10 by means of triangular shaped levers 18, Fig. 8, hinged to a plate 19 on the abutment and provided with a spherical joint 26 to the end of the rib. In cases where the bridge is subjected to considerable tidal action this connection may be replaced by a roller and slot connection. At the crown when formed in two ribs, the parts are provided with a hinge connection 14, 15, Fig. 4, allowing relative lateral movement, and compensating device 16 with rollers 17 are provided to prevent relative inclination of the ribs under load. Sliding cover plates are provided for the joints at the crown and the ends.. Specification 8014/13, [Class 20 (i)], is referred to.
