Abstract

487,890. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. EVANS, C. J., and EVANS, S. C. Jan. 14, 1937, No. 1090. [Class 118 (ii)] An electromagnetically operated direction-indicator comprises a core moved in either direction by a solenoid and adapted at the end of its travel to break the operating circuit and to be mechanically locked. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, upon a solenoid 17 being energized, core 18 is displaced downwardly, causing the arm 23 to rotate the indicating arm 13 into its signalling position. As the core reaches its extreme position, a projection 35 causes the contacts 31, 32 in the circuit of the solenoid 17 to separate, the core being retained in the operating position by a ball 38 and spring 41 engaging a recess 39. In order to restore the arm, the upper solenoid 20 is energized, lifting the core 21, the projection 35 breaking the circuit of solenoid 20 at the contacts 33, 34 and the locking means passing into recess 40. In a modification, Fig. 7, the arms 23, 13 are returned by a spring 52, the arm 13 being displaced into its signalling position as before, but the solenoid 20 is arranged to withdraw the core 21 pivoted to a catch 49 which is urged by the spring 55 to engage in the notch 50 when the arm 13 is in its operating position to allow the arm to return to its normal position. Other switch contacts similar to 31, 32 may be arranged so that the arm 13 takes up intermediate positions, additional recesses being arranged so that the arm is held in these positions. Switches arranged similarly to 31, 32 may operate other signalling apparatus on the vehicle and the arm may be slidably mounted.
