Abstract

476,827. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. OSHEI, W. E., and TRICOFOLBERTH, Ltd. Aug. 27, 1936, No. 23568. [Class 118 (ii)] Movement of an electro - magnetically operated semaphore arm switches a resistance into the circuit of the operating coil and /or of a tell-tale device which may be visual or audible. When the manual switch 23 is closed the operating coil 14 of the arm 16 and the alarm device 35 are energized in parallel and the arm moves into its exposed position. As the core 15 of the solenoid reaches its lower position, a projection 32 on the core opens contacts 26, 30 to bring the resistance 33, in the form of a holding coil, into series connection with the operating coil and alarm device so that the current in the circuit is reduced. The arm is held in the exposed position by the reduced current and the alarm lamp is dimly illuminated until the switch 23 is opened by hand or by a suitable time switch. As the lamp or buzzer device 35 is energized fully during the actuating time of the arm only, its continued actuation indicates faulty operation. Instead of providing an additional winding or resistance 33, the lamp 35 may be used, the switch 26, 30 connecting the lamp 35 and coil 14 in series to provide the required current reduction.
