Abstract

487,844. Annealing. COLD METAL PROCESS CO. Sept. 18, 1936, No. 25474. Void. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1935. [Class 72] [Also in Group XXII] Sheet metal particularly for use in deep drawing is cold rolled and then maintained for some time above the upper critical temperature of 1700‹ F. and then cooled at least until the A1 point is reached. The metal strip may be first plated with copper or other softer metal in a coating bath 11 and then is cold rolled with 80 per cent reduction to a thickness of from À001" to À035". It then passes through a 15' long furnace 15 above 1700‹ F. in a reducing atmosphere, preferably at a speed of 18' per minute and it then emerges to a cooling chamber 17 also with a reducing atmosphere. The speed of travel of the strip through the furnace affects the Olsen value, being plotted on Fig. 4 (not shown). After cooling, the metal may be box-annealed and normalized, but as the Rockwell hardness number is usually below 50-45, this process may be dispensed with. A cup drawn from the metal with a ratio of depth to diameter greater than À3 is free from ears.
