487,428. Testing abrasion- and extrusion-resistance properties. SANDBERG, C. P., SANDBERG, O. F. A., and HUMFREY, J. C. W. Jan. 29. 1937, No. 2658. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for testing the abrasion-resisting and extrusion-resisting properties of materials comprises a roller 5 driving a test piece 11, having an annular run, so that both rolling and sliding occur at the places of contact. The test piece 11 is mounted in a holder 12 by a stud 13 connected to a spindle 14 rotatable in a housing 15 which is freely slidable in a bracket 16 provided on an upright 17. A lever and weight, 21, 22 maintains a predetermined pressure between test piece and roller. The upright 17 can be rotated round the bolt 23 to alter the amount of slip between the contacting surfaces. The amount of slip may also be varied by making the roller conical. The roller 5 is driven through a coupling 6 and to prevent the formation of grooves, is given an axial oscillation by means of the worm 7, pinion 8, crank 26, connecting rod 28, lever 29 pivoted at 30, and trunnions 32. The loss of weight indicates the abrasion. The difference between loss of height measured, and as calculated from the loss of weight indicates the extrusion. In a modification., the test piece may drive the roller. The test piece may be taken from a rail section with the annular rim formed wholly from the upper surface of the rail.
