Abstract
Skins or pelts are dyed using a dye bath containing a salt of a nuclear substitution product of a di- or poly-oxybenzene with an aromatic or heterocyclic amine and an emulsifying or wetting agent. Strong, fast tints are thereby obtained. In examples, a chromium-mordanted white rabbit skin is dyed a green-gray tint in a bath containing: (1) the salt from 4-aceto-1 : 2-dioxybenzene and 4-aminodiphenylamine, a dispersing agent made as described in example 1 of Specification 240,318, [Class 2 (iii)], and hydrogen peroxide, and a blue-gray tint in a bath containing (2) the salt from 4-trichloraceto-1 : 2-dioxybenzene and 1 : 5-diaminonaphthalene, together with isopropylnaphthalene sulphonic acid and hydrogen peroxide. In a further example (3) a chromium-mordanted white lamb skin is dyed reddish-brown in a bath containing the salt from 4-chloro-1 : 2-dioxybenzene and 8-aminoquinoline, the wetting agent of (1) above, and hydrogen peroxide. Isopropylnaphthalene-sulphonic acid is prepared by treating naphthalene with strong sulphuric acid in the presence of isopropyl alcohol.
