Abstract

A reaction product of nitric acid with an unsaturated fatty acid, or a reduction product thereof is added to mercerizing lyes which already contain phenols and also wetting agents normally insoluble in the lyes such as hydrogenated aromatic compounds, alcohols, glycol-, polyglycol- and glycerine ethers, nitrogenous bases, naphthenic acids, sulphonamides, thiocarbamic acids, sulphamic acids and secondary aliphatic amines. In an example, a nitration product of oleic acid, crude cresol and cyclohexanol are added to a mercerizing lye, and in another a nitration product of oleic acid which has been reduced with sulphurous acid, crude cresol and naphthenic acid are employed. The use of di-isobutylsulphamic acid (see Specification 455,893) is mentioned as well as the nitration products of linoleic and ricinoleic acids. The treatment with nitric acid appears to cause oxidation and decomposition of the fatty acids, together with the introduction of nitro groups.
