Abstract
485,929. Testing speedometers. HARTRIDGE. L. Nov. 24, 1936, No. 32192. [Class 106 (iii)] A device for testing speedometers of motor vehicles comprises peripherally roughened rollers 7, 8 rotated by the vehicle driving wheels, the shaft 5 fixed to the rollers 7 being rigid with the rotor of a generator 9 electrically connected to a speedometer 10, the readings of which can be compared with the vehicle speedometer. The rollers are of aluminium or light metal alloy with reinforcing webs or spiders and are roughened by being serrated and machined or by applying a coating of silicon carbide. The rollers 7 can be locked, to enable a vehicle to be driven over them, by means of a lever 19 having a detent 20 for engaging a castellated wheel 18 fixed to the shaft 5. The vehicle is anchored by means of the hook 15 carried by a pivoted stirrup 16. The driving wheels of the vehicle can be steadied at any desired rate of rotation by a brake 21 on the shaft 6 operated by a lever 22. The device when not in use is covered by the plate 11 mounted on rollers 12 running on rails 13. The device, instead of being sunk in the pit 2, may be raised and provided with a ramp, and the hook 15 may be replaced by a chain. The pointer of the speedometer 10 may bridge one or a number of successive pairs of contacts to energize coloured lamps or bells, or the shaft 5 may drive a centrifugal governor to close electrical contacts successively.
