Abstract
485,590. Steam - propelled vehicles. ALLEY, S. E. Nov. 21, 1936, No. 31928. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVI] An engine for a steampropelled vehicle, such as a locomotive, has two horizontal cylinders 10, 11 arranged parallel and spaced apart within the width of the journals or wheels of the driving-axle and a closed crank-casing 17 mounted on the axle 14 and supporting the crankshaft 18 to which the axle is geared within the casing, which crank casing incorporates four webs 23 .. 26 so spaced that the two inner webs 24, 25 carry the crank-shaft bearings and are located between the cylinder axes, and the two outer webs 23, 26, which may form part of the shell, are outside the centre lines of the cylinders. The shafts 18, 14 are geared by wheels 19, 20 arranged centrally between the cranks 21, 22. The shaft 18 may be above, below, or in the same horizontal plane with the shaft 14. The shaft 18 is slid endwise into position with anti-friction bearings 27. The webs 24.. 26 have aligned apertures graduated in size. The webs 24, 25 have seating-members 29, 30; the webs 23, 26 carry cover plates 31, 32. A separate oil sump 33 is arranged beneath the casing. The sump 33 and the adjacent part of the casing form halves of the axle bearings. The sump has three wells 36.. 38, and the wells 36, 38 have oil-withdrawal pipes 39, 40 which are connected with eccentric-operated feed pumps 41. The wheel 20 dips into the well 37. The piston-rods pass through glands to cross-heads which carry scraper rings 50. The cross-head spaces are closed and connected by an interconnection 49. Tubes 52 containing non-return valves 53 and a pipe 54 are provided to detect steam or oil leakage past the stuffing- box into the cross-head guides. The valvechests have spaced liners 57, 58 and house waisted piston valves 59. The liners beyond the chests house waisted cross-heads 61 and carry conical shields 60 and drain pipes 62. A modified form of Hackworth gear operates the valves. A horizontal link 63 extends from the cross-head 61 to a vertically-disposed link 64 the upper end of which is rotated by a crank-pin 65 on a shaft 66 supported in bearings carried by the webs 24, 25. The lower end of the link 64 is pivoted to a block 68 slidable in an arcuate guideway 69 mounted in a shell angularly adjusted by a lever 71 connected to the reversing-gear. The primary valve-gear parts are enclosed within the casing and a cover 74 is secured thereto. The shaft 66 is driven by toothed gearing from the main shaft. The casing contains caps to facilitate machining of the crank-case and a bearing-cap for the sleeve carrying the shaft 66. The crank-case has a large cover 86 to permit the insertion of the assembled shaft. Drainage valves 80, opened when the lever 71 is in mid-position, are connected to conduits 82 which lead to a low level in the engine exhaust. One or more engines may drive a locomotive. Specifications 223,303 and 274,203, [both in Class 120 (iii)], are referred to.
