[Class 100 (i)] A device for side-registering sheets; which is especially applicable to overlapping stream feeds, of the kind in which the sheets are pulled against side lays by a reciprocating gripper is so constructed that both the opening and closing movements of the gripper are effected during the movements of the gripper in the direction towards the stop. In one form, Fig. 1, the gripper is carried by a reciprocating bar 3 and comprises a fixed member 1 and a pivoted member 2 acted upon by a spring 5 which tends to close it. As the gripper moves away from the lay 6 an adjustable arm 10 on a shaft 7 acts on a roller 11 carried by the arm 2 and maintains the gripper open. The shaft 7 is rotated by a cam and a rod 13 and arm 12 as the gripper moves towards the lay and permits the spring 5 to close the gripper. Finally the shaft 7 is returned to open the gripper at the time that the sheet reaches the lay 6. A rotary cam acting direct on the roller 11 may replace the oscillating arm 10. In Fig. 3, the gripper member 2 is controlled by toggle links 31, 32, which occupy the chain position as the gripper moves away from the stop. As the slide returns a pivoted pawl 22 operates the toggles and moves them to the full line position and the gripper 2 closes on the sheet. A fixed stop 34 finally opens the gripper 2 as the side lay is reached. In a further modification the gripper 2, which is opened by a fixed cam as the side lay is reached, is held open by a spring-controlled catch until the slide 3 commences to move towards the lay, when the catch is released by a pawl 22.
