Abstract

Alcohols are produced by the reduction of free high molecular weight non-aromatic acids with hydrogen under pressure in the presence of nickel, cobalt, and/or copper and of basic oxides of di- or tri-valent metals in amount at least equivalent to the free carboxylic acid present. Alternatively the salts of the carboxylic acid with di- or tri-valent metals, may be reduced with hydrogen. Suitable acids are those having at least 8 carbon atoms such as stearic, oleic, and palmitic acids, the oxidation products of paraffin wax, higher paraffin hydrocarbons, and of hydrogenation products of coal, tars and mineral oils in the liquid phase preferably at 100-200 DEG C. with oxygen, nitrous gases, nitric acid and the like in the presence of catalysts such as manganese palmitate, sodium carbonate-manganese stearate, sodium palmitate-aluminium palmitate and the like. When the soaps are to be reduced they may be in solution or suspension in alcohols such as dodecyl or hexadecyl alcohol, dioxane or ethers or paraffins of high molecular weight. In examples, (1) paraffin oil is oxidized with air at 140 DEG C. in the presence of manganese stearate, and the product is reduced with hydrogen at 200 atmospheres, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of 15 parts cobalt and 85 parts magnesia; (2) a similar oxidation product of paraffin oil made in the presence of calcium naphthenate is reduced with hydrogen in the presence of a cobalt-calcium oxide catalyst; (3) an oxidation product of Diesel oil is reduced in the presence of a copper-magnesia catalyst at 270 atmospheres; (4) an oxidation product of soft paraffin wax is heated with zinc oxide at 100 DEG C. and reduced in the presence of a copper-magnesia-chromium oxide catalyst at 200 atmospheres.
