484,562. Enamels and glazes. ARNOLD, J. C. (Harshaw Chemical Co.) Jan. 3, 1938, No. 127. [Class 56] An opacifier for enamels, to be added to the frit in the mill, is made by fusing a mixture containing a fluoride, an oxide of a base-forming element, an oxide of antimony, and an oxide of titanium or zirconium. The fluorides are preferably those of calcium, barium, magnesium, or aluminium and sodium, or substances which yield these on decomposition. The base-forming element may be the alkalineearth metals, aluminium, zinc, or tin or a combination of these, and they may be replaced in part by sodium, potassium, or lithium. A suitable composition may comprise 14-25 per cent of calcium oxide, 5-24 per cent of calcium fluoride, 35-43 per cent of antimony pentoxide, and 25-32 per cent of titanium dioxide. A number of compositions are given in the Specification.
