Abstract

<PICT:0483856/IV/1> Apparatus for treating cakes of thread with a succession of liquids for washing, desulphiding, bleaching, &c., comprises a receptacle which is provided with a number of carriers for the cakes and is movable along a guideway for successive co - operation with a number of standpipes arranged below the guideway. The receptacle 1 is carried on rails 4 by a frame 2 and supports tiers of perforated pipes 7 carrying perforated tubes 8 on which the cakes 14 are mounted. If the cake supports are arranged vertically, they may consist of flutted or star-shaped rods. The receptacle has a hole in its bottom wall fitted with a tube 5 with a rubber washer 12. Each standpipe 6 is supplied with liquid by a pipe 16 and is arranged with a tank 13 having a discharge pipe 15. As the receptacle 1 is brought into register with each standpipe, it is lowered on to it by providing depressions in the rails 4, the washer 12 making a liquid-tight joint. Alternatively, an extension pipe or an inflatable tube on the pipe 6 may be raised into engagement with the pipe 5. Liquid forced up the pipe 6 flows into the pipes 7 and through the cakes 14. The pipe 6 is of large diameter, so that the liquid flows through it with low linear velocity and merely overflows into the tank 13 when the receptacle is removed.
