Abstract

Pigments comprising mixed crystals of lead chromate and lead molybdate are obtained by reacting a suspension of a basic lead compound such as the oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or basic carbonate with a solution of chromium trioxide in the presence of molybdic acid or a molybdate, and if desired in the presence of sulphuric acid. When molybdates are used, an acid which forms a soluble lead salt, such as nitric or acetic acid, is added in an amount at least equivalent to the molybdate. Acid and/or buffer substances are preferably added before, during or after the conversion, the hydrogen ion concentration being adjusted to between 10-2 and 10-6. The colour of the product may thus be varied from orange to red, yellowish shades being obtained at very high and very low pH values within the range and reddish shades at mean pH values. Diluents or fillers, such as heavy spar or aluminium hydroxide, may be added to the products. In one example, a suspension of white lead at 25-30 DEG C. is reacted with a solution of chromium and molybdenum trioxides. In another example, to a suspension of litharge, there is added a solution of chromium trioxide, sulphuric acid, ammonium molybdate and nitric acid. Acetic acid and aqueous ammonia are added to produce a pH value of 4,0. The mixture is stirred until the colour shade undergoes no further deepening.
