Abstract
483,412. Retort furnaces for low=temperature carbonization. BOULANGER, L. March 16, 1937, No. 7746. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] An apparatus for carbonizing coal, lignite, or bituminous schist in dust form comprises an horizontal retort 4 with a screw conveyer 5, a fireplace 11 at the discharge end, and a heating-flue around the greater part of the length of the retort, an horizontal partition being arranged in the fireplace and the flue so that the heating- gases will flow in contact with the lower part of the retort in counter-current with the charge, and will then return in the opposite direction in contact with the upper part. The offtakes 19, 19<1> for the gases and vapours are at the unheated charging end of the retort, and the former which passes through the feed hopper 2, may have a protecting sheath of openwork metal. The blade of the screw conveyer may be apertured, or spaced from its shaft.
