Abstract
483,395. Optical sound recording and reproducing apparatus. KOLB, O. K., and PRATT, A. S. Nov. 21, 1936, No. 31946. [Class 40 (ii)] In recording sound with amplitude control, an additional record track is made of an independent super-audible or sub-audible frequency the amplitude of which is subjected to the same control as the recorded sound, and this additional track to control volume in reproduction. In one recording arrangement, the output of an amplifier connected to a microphone and the output of an oscillator are mixed and controlled by a single volume control and fed to a recording amplifier, which makes a combined record. Reproduction from such a record is by means of a single photo - cell 8, connected to two transformers 9, 10. The transformer 9 transmits sound current to an amplifier K ; and the other transformer 10 has a secondary tuned to the oscillator frequency and feeds that frequency to an amplifier L containing a rectifier 11, the output of which serves to control the amplification of the amplifier K. In a modified reproducing arrangement separate filters are provided between a transformer in the photo-cell circuit and the two amplifiers K, L. In another recording arrangement, the current from the microphone amplifier and the current from the oscillator are not mixed but subjected to the same amount of amplitude control before being recorded in separate tracks. Reproduction from a record with two such tracks, is by means of two photo-cells connected to two separate amplifiers, the amplifier of the control frequency having a rectifier, the output of which controls the amplification of the sound amplifier.
