Abstract

Polyvinyl ethers are stabilized against mechanical treatment and ageing by adding up to about 1 per cent of a cyclic organic amine or an organic substance containing sulphide or aromatic hydroxyl groups; the added substance may contain the amino, sulphide or aromatic hydroxyl groups more than once or simultaneously. Stabilizing-agents containing sulphide groups may be added before polymerization. Specified substances are cyclohexylamine, dicyclohexylamine, benzidine, phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, alpha-naphthylamine, di-(2-hydroxy-5 alkylphenyl)-sulphides, e.g. di-(2-hydroxy-5-butylphenyl)-sulphide or disulphide or corresponding isobutyl, amyl and isoamyl compounds, phenol, cresols, quinone, aminophenols, mercaptobenzthiazole, polyvinyl ethyl sulphide and polyvinyl butyl sulphide. In examples, (1) polymerized vinyl isobutyl ether, dissolved in cyclohexane, is stabilized by an addition of 0,8 per cent of di (2-hydroxy-5-butylphenyl)-disulphide, or di-(2-hydroxy-5-amylphenyl)-sulphide, dicyclohexylamine or alpha-naphthyl amine; polyvinyl ethyl ether may be similarly treated; (2) vinyl isobutyl ether is polymerized in liquid propane containing boron fluoride with an addition of 0,4 per cent of di-(2-hydroxy-5-isobutylphenyl)-sulphide.
