Abstract
482,127. Setting rivets &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., GOULDBOURN, J., and KESTELL, T. A. Sept. 22, 1936, No. 25689. [Class 43] A machine for setting rivets, eyelets, &c. in preformed holes in two angularly bent pieces 120 of sheet metal for example, comprises a setting die 18, which is carried by a bar 16 vertically slidable by a lever 32 in the upper arm 14 of a frame 10 and is provided with a nipple pin 20 for feeding rivets from a camactuated rivet raceway 24 communicating with a hopper 22 of the kind described in Specifications 460,370 and 476,878, a setting or clenching tool 30, mounted on a vertically movable slide 108 which is carried by the lower arm 26 of the said frame and is connected to a lever 48, and work supporting arms 28, also mounted on the arm 26. The lever 32 is connected at its rear end to the rod 44 of a pneumaticallyactuated piston housed in a cylinder 46 and is pivoted at 34 to and between a pair of bellcrank levers 36 which are connected at their front ends to a pair of links 38 pivoted to the frame 10 and at their rear ends by rods 40 and link 41 to a lever 42, the cylinder 46 being pivoted at its underside to the rear end of the lever 48 which is itself pivoted at 49 in the frame 10. The cylinder 46 is supported by a compression spring 50 seated in a recess in the machine frame, and an adjustable spring- biassed plunger 27, which serves normally to hold the front end of the lever 48 down and the clenching tool 30 depressed, is mounted in the frame arm 26. The upper and lower ends of the cylinder 46 are connected by pipes 52, 54 to ducts in a controlling valve 60 supported by the frame 10, the valve comprising a body portion 62 provided with ducts 64, 66, 68 leading respectively to the pipes 52, 54 and to atmosphere, and a valve disc 74 which is rotatable by a double-armed lever 72 when one arm 90 of the latter is contacted by the free end of the lever 42 and is provided with two ports 80, 82 to connect either of the ducts 64, 66 to the supply duct 65 and a third port 84 in the form of a recess which serves to connect the duct 64 to the exhaust 68 when the duct 66 is connected to the supply and vice versa. The machine also includes a valve 96 which is located in a cylinder 92 provided with a main air-inlet port 94 and a duct 95 leading by a flexible pipe to the supply duct 65 and is actuated by a treadle rod through a lever 99, the latter having a lug 101 overlying the lever 42. In operation, actuation of the treadle lever 99 first opens the valve 96, opening the main supply of compressed air to the upper side of the piston in the cylinder 46 and moving the piston to its lower position. The rod 40 is then lowered by engagement of the lug 101 with the lever 42 to rock the levers 36 and lower the bar 16 which feeds a rivet to the work 120 so that its flange presses upon the work with a firm but limited pressure, the latter being controlled by the plunger 27, and then provides a setting abutment at the upper side of the work, at which time the toggles constituted by the links 38 and levers 36 are arranged to be fully straightened and the lever 42 is in contact with the arm 90 of the lever 72 of the valve disc 74. The valve disc 74 is then rotated to connect the lower end of the cylinder 46 to the compressed air supply and the upper end to exhaust, rivet-clenching pressure then being applied, balanced as between the levers 32, 48, to push forcibly the clenching tool 30 upwardly against the end of the rivet projecting below the work, the other end of the rivet being held up by the bar 16. Release of the treadle will permit the parts to return to their original positions, a spring 91 being provided to rotate the valve 74 to connect the upper part of the cylinder 46 to the air supply before the latter is cut off by the valve 96. Mechanicallyoperated means for clenching the rivets may be used instead of the pneumatic cylinder and associated parts.
