HAND PRESS.
Application filed November 10, 1926.
This invention relates to hand presses and more particularly to presses which are adapted to do heavy work.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a hand press which is adapted to perform a great variety of work, such as punching, blanking, shearing and forming,
Another object of my invention is to form a single action hand press of the lever class which is adapted to convert ordinary manual pressure on the handle to enormous pre sure at the working points of the mechanism.
A further object of my invention is to provide a hand press which is sturdy and durable, which is very unlikely to get out of order, and which will accommodate vari ous styles of tools for working at high pressures.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:

These side members are separated by means of members 10 and 11 at their base portions as clearly shown in Fig. 3. These separating members 10 and 11 may be fastened to the b'ase of the side members by riveting, bolting welding or in any suitable manner. The separating member 10 is located centrally of the side members and adjacent the central pair of upstanding portions a, and together with these upstanding portions forms a race for a tool member 2-0. one end of said side members and adjacent another pair of said upstanding members 5, 5, and together with said pair of upstanding members forms a support for a complementary tool member 21. This member 21 has an aperture 22 therethrough, and mounted in this aperture so as to project through the same is a pin 23, the outer portions of which project outwardly from the tool member and are provided with flatsides adapted to bear firmly against the upstanding portions 5, 5, as shown in Fig. 1. This tool is further secured in position bymeans of a threaded bolt 24 which extends through the same and into the separating member 11. It will thus be apparent that the stationary tool member 21 is firmly held in position against the side members and on the separating member 11. y
A levcr member designated in its entirety at 3011a; oll'set parallel arms 31 and One of these arms 31 has an aperture 31' therein at its outermost end through which a suitable pin is adapted to extend. This pin extends through apertures in the upstanding portions of 4, 4 and pivots the lever member in position between the upstanding members.
The inner end of the arm 31 is supported as at 31" by means of a coil spring 34, the lower end of which rests on the separating member 10. The upper surface of the arm provides a cam race 35; and a cam member which is pivoted as at 41 to the upstanding portions 3, 3 and which has a cam surface 4-2 is adapted to bear against the cam race 35 and force the lever member 30 downwardly upon operation oi. the handle to. The cam member 40 has a pin 46 extending through the same and a pin 47 extends through the outer end of the arnr 32. A link or toggle 48 is sli'dably mounted on these pins and performs a function which will be hereinafter described.
The arm 31 is provided with a short project-ion 50 which is located directly below the pivot pin 33. The tool member 20 is provided with a depression 51 in which the projection 50 rests. Upon movement of the projection 50 the tool 20 is thus caused to slide longitudinally between the side portions 4. 4. A pin extending between the upstanding portions 4, 4' firmly holdsthe tool member 20in its place.
The operation of my device is as follows: When the handle 43 1s swung downwardly by the hand of the operator as shown in Fig. 3, the cam surface 42 hearing against the cam race 35 firmly presses one end of the pivoted member 30 do wnwarc ly between the upstanding portions 3, 8. hen the end of the lever 30 is pressed downwardly, the projection 50 is caused to swing toward the stationary tool 21. This causes the movable tool 20 to slide in its race toward the stationary tool. This causes the working surfaces or cutting edges 61 and 62 to be brought toward each other, thereby performins; the desired punching, shearing or cutting operation as determined by the charactcrof the tools employed. During this operation the coil spring 34; is compressed and upon release of the handle at the memher 330 resumes its former position. hen the tools are employed to perform the punching and blanking operations and the compression spring 34: has not sufficient strength to release the tools, the handle member 43 is forced upwardly and the link l8 thereby engages the pins a6 and li-7 and the lever 30 will be lifted by the link l8 causing the tools 20 and 21 to separate. An adjusting screw is shown at 31' and by means of this screw the points of the tools can be adjusted to working posit-ion by turning the same up or down as desired. This adjusting screw acts as a stop screw, and also forms the anchor for the compression spring 34 at its lower end. The adjusting screw cooperates with the projection 31 to adjust the Working position of the tools.
While I have illustrated my invention and employed tool members 20 and 21 which are adapted to perform the cutting action, it is obvious that I may employ tools which will perform other functions. hen I apply my inventionto the other classes of work, it will be obvi'ous'that I construct my tools in the same manner and provide a movable tool with a depression 51. In so constructing these tools I merely vary the working points 61 and 62 to accommodate the class of work desired. I do not therefore Wish to limit myself to the exact style of tool represented in the drawings, as I contemplate in connection with my device the manufacture of a score or more of tools, each of which is adapted to perform a different function, but all of which are adapted to accommodate themselves to the inventive principles of my press.
Secured to the upstanding member t by means of suitable pins "('0 and 71 is a slidable link 72, the end 7 of which is adapted to form an adjustable support for work ap plied to the press.
It will be understood that various changes in the detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of theinvention is-defined by the appended claims.

A hand press of the character described comprising a pair of side members having upstanding parallel duplicate portions arranged in pairs, a pair of tool members one of which is movable, separating members between said side members, one of said separating members in conjunction with a pair of said upstanding portions forming a race for said movable tool member, the other of said segar 'ating members in conjunction with another pair of upstanding portions providholding means for the other tool member, a lever member, means comprising i cam whereby one end of said le may be depressed, means comprising a pair of links associated with said cam member whereby the same en d of said lever member ii ay be elevated, and an operative connection between said lever member and said movable tool member whereby the latter may be moved.

A hand press of the character described comprising a pair of side members having upstanding parallel duplicate portions ar ranged in pairs, a pair of tool members one of which is movable, separating members between said side members, one of said separating members in conjunction with a pair of said upstanding portions forming a race for said movable tool member, the other of said. separating members in conjunction with another pair of upstanding portions providing holding means for the other tool member, a lever member, means for depressing' one end of said lever member, means comprising a coil spring whereby the same end of said lever member may be raised, and an operative connection between said lever member and said movable tool member as and for the purpose specified.

A device of the class described comprising means providing a base, a stationary tool upon the base, uprights extending u wardly at the sides of the base, a movable tool movable upon the base between the uprights, a lever pivoted between the uprights and operatively connected to the movable tool, an actuating lever pivotally mounted upon the base, said actuating lever presenting a cam surface engageable upon said lever to press the lever downwardly to move the movable tool toward the stationary tool.

A device of the class described comprisin g means providing a base, a stationary tool upon the base, uprights extending up wardly at the sides of the base, a movable tool movable upon the base between the uprights, a lever pivoted between the uprights and operatively connected to the movable tool, an actuating lever pivotally mounted upon the base, and means providing a loose connection between the actuating lever and said lever whereby said lever may be lifted by the actuating lever to retract the movable tool.

A device of the class described comprising means providing a base, a stationary tool upon the base, upri hts extending upwardly at the sides of the base, a movable tool movable upon the base between the uprights, a lever pivoted between the uprights and operatively connected to the movable tool, an actuating lever pivotally mounted upon the base, the first mentioned lever extending downwardly and then rearwardly beneath the actuating lever, said actuating lever having a cam surface engageable upon the rearwardly extending portion whereby said lever may be moved downwardly by the actuating lever to move the movable tool to ward the stationary tool. a

A device of the class described comprising means providing a base, a stationary tool upon the base, uprights extending upwardly at the sides of the base, a movable tool movable upon the base between the uprights, a lever pivoted between the uprights and operatively connected to the movable tool, an actuating lever pivotally mounted upon the base, said actuating lever serving to move the first mentioned lever downwardly to cause it to move the movable tool toward the stationary tool, and spring means disposed between the first mentioned lever and the base for urging the first mentioned lever upwardly. v

A device of the class described comprising means providing a base, a stationary tool upon the base, uprights extending upwardly at the sides of the base, a movable tool movable upon the base between the uprights, a lever pivoted between the uprights and operatively connected to the movable tool, an actuating lever pivotally mounted upon the base, said actuating lever serving to move the first mentioned lever downwardly to cause it to move the movable tool toward the stationary tool, and spring means disposed between the first mentioned lever and the base for urging the first mentioned lever upwardly, and an adjusting screw mounted upon the base anddisposed within said spring means for limiting the downward movement of said lever.
