Abstract

481,751. Control of D.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CROFT, E. H. Sept. 23, 1936, No. 25848. [Class 38 (iii)] i i Varying E.M.F.-A range of speed control for a group of motors is obtained by connecting two similar sources in series or in parallel, and in order to provide a continuous tractive effort during the transition from parallel to series connection of the sources, the motors are first connected in series across one of the sources with the other source disconnected, then some of the motors are short-circuited through a resistance and the remaining motors supplied from the first source, then the disconnected motors are reconnected to the other source with a connection common to the sources and the two groups of motors, and finally the common connection is broken. In the first step of a controller contactors BP1, BP2, LS1, S1, S2, S3, and G4 close to connect motors A1-A4 in in series across battery sections B1. B2, connected in parallel, and on the second and third steps contactors 1-4 and 5-8 are closed to short-circuit resistances R1, R2, in two steps. The battery connections are then charged from parallel to series in a series of transition steps. The contactor BP2 is first opened, contactors 1-8 are then opened and a contactor B closed, followed by the opening of the contactor BP1, and finally the closure of the contactor BS. Further speed control is effected bv the resistances R1, R2, and the change from series to series-parallel and from series-parallel to parallel connection of the motors. Stages of field weakening may also be employed. Means may be provided so that alternative sections of the battery take the load during transition from parallel to series connection of the battery sections, and resistances may be connected in the battery circuits during the parallel connection thereof.
