481,408. Cables. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 6, 1937, No. 21734. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1936. [Class 36] A liquid-filled cable comprises segmental bodies 5 of densely compacted strands 6 of bare wire, the. bodies 5 being assembled to form a single conductor of cylindrical form having a central channel 7 to contain liquid, a body of permeable insulation 8 surrounding the segments, partitions 10 of non-conducting material located between adjacent faces of the segments to permit conveyance of liquid from the channel 7 to the insulation 8, and an impermeable sheath 16. The channel 7 may be bounded by an open helical metal core 9; such core may, however, be omitted. The partitions 10 may be formed of permeable material wound round the segments or located only between adjacent surfaces thereof.' A metal binding tape 12 prevents spreading of the segments, such tape being insulated from the segments by layers 13 of permeable material. Cords 14 of soft cotton or paper are laid in the spaces between the rounded corners of the segments. In a modification, strips having shallow radial or diagonal grooves on one or both side faces are used as partitions between the segments. In another form, smooth strips are employed, grooves being formed in the surfaces of the segments on opposite sides of the strips. The filling liquid may be degasified oil or chlorinated diphenyl.
