Abstract

481,184. Washing gases. FREYN ENGINEERING CO. June 5, 1936, No. 15792. Convention date, June 6, 1935. [Class 55 (ii)] Blast-furnace gas is washed by impinging it at a temperature above 100‹ C. against fixed surfaces sprayed with hot water so that the moisture content of the gas is increased, then bringing it to its dew point by impingement against baffles wetted by cooler water and finally passing it through a cooling stage in which turbulence due to change in direction is avoided and a fog is formed. Hot gas from a dust catcher enters tangentially at 12 a tower 10 containing in the lower part hurdles 13 of inverted tear drop section with hot water sprays 14 and more closely packed hurdles 16 in the upper part with cooler sprays 17. Gas passes at its dew point through pipe 32 to a condenser 11 and passes without turbulence between vertical parallel plates 33 with cold water sprays 34. The plates 33 may be corrugated. Moisture and fine dust are finally separated centrifugally by horizontal passage between arcuate plates 36g, the gas being deflected to the entry 36c by an inclined baffle 36b, and passing with acceleration in semicircular passages to the opposite outlet 36f and thence to pipe 44. The plates 36g are rubber coated and wetted by sprays 37, and their outlet end is curved more sharply. Water in the tower 10 is recirculated, about 20 per cent being led off to a clarifier 22, the water being replaced from a reservoir 26 and fed to the sprays 17. Water from condenser 11 is fed to the reservoir, which also receives water from the clarifier 22. The temperature of the sprays 17 is adjusted by varying the quantity from each source, so as to bring the gas to its dew point. The bottom of the tower has an arcuate baffle to give the gas a circular flow and has an annular curtain of spray at the inlet.
