[Class 82 (ii)] [See also Group V] A method of producing porous light-weight aggregate from molten slag consists in rendering liquid slag porous by treating it with water or other volatile liquids or gases, cooling the porous slag to a viscous state, subjecting it to a mixing operation during which the mass is broken up into particles, and solidifying. The slag may be rendered porous and brought to a viscous state by causing it to flow down a sloping trough b, into which water in small quantities is admitted at the upper end (nozzle c<1>) and by blowing cold air or sprinkling water from above on to the slag in the trough (nozzle c3) The gas-containing viscous slag may be mixed, broken up and solidified by leading it on to the surface of a cooled revolving concave conical disc d having radially extending corrugations e which flatten out and merge into the surface of the disc at the central part and form vertical ledges towards the periphery. As shown water is sprayed on to the slag and disc through a nozzle c<2>. In a modification, the viscous slag is led into a cooled revolving sloping drum having at the upper end a contracted inlet formed with internal longitudinal corrugations.
