The finger-operated dial D rotates through gearing 24, 26 and unidirectional driving means 36, 38, a carrier 34 for a series of detachable pictures 90 positioned at openings 88. The spring returned picture carrier 34 is held in dialled position, when the hand-piece H is removed, through the vertically movable rod 66, leaf spring 62, pawl 58 and detent teeth 56 on the carrier 34. The dial D is restored to initial position when released by the spring 40. The pictures can be seen through the window W and are illuminated by the electric lamp 100. The window W is provided with a closure member C which can only be opened when the dial D is in initial position and which then prevents rotation of the dial. The lamp 100 is energized when the switch lever S is depressed in the central slot 148 of the plate 140 to make the contacts 126, 132. An electric bell 160, 162, 166 is energized when the switch lever S is depressed in either of the slots 146, 150, to make the contacts 124, 130 or 128, 134 respectively, a muffled sound being produced in the latter case by a rubber knob 170 on the bent end of the lever S engaging the gong 160. A clicking sound is produced when the hand-piece H is removed or replaced by the provision of a U-shaped leaf spring 172, which in a modified construction may be mounted in the base of the toy and operated by a suitable rod such as the rod 66. The base 92 is removable through the nuts 94 for access to the various parts. The toy telephone may be of the type shown with simulated earphone P and mouth-piece M on the hand-piece, or may be of the upright type, the hand-piece having a simulated ear-phone only.
